Optimists Cricket Club 1st XI Optimists v Greens CC on Sun 07 Jun 2009 at 13:30
Optimists Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
The 1st XI finally registered their first win of the season with a comfortable victory over 2008 league champions, Greens CC.
The match was rain-shortened to 39 overs a side. OCC skipper Heath won the toss and put Greens in to bat, despite the ground still being very wet. With rain affected matches being decided on simple run-rate, it is always important to bat second, in order to better control the result.
In any case, the OCC bowlers began well taking two quick wickets. The new ball seamed around more than usual, perhaps due to the wet pitch. But it took the experienced Latif to build the Greens' innings, which he did well, before being bowled by Neale for 56. It was a typical batting performance from the Greens - many talented batsmen who like to hit the ball a long way, but if you put the ball in the right areas, you can get them cheaply. Let them get away and they always score quickly.
All in all, it was a relatively disciplined fielding performance from OCC, with no dropped catches and only 10 wides registed in the 39 overs, no mean feat, considering the strictness of the umpiring on wides in the Belgian League.
In response, the OCC innings started well. Despite the ball still seaming around on the drying track, opening duo Burleigh and Mole putting on 51 runs in 10 overs for no wicket - the perfect platform for a run chase. Mole anchored the innings until the 25th over and registed his first 50 of the season. A fine knock in tricky conditions. Heath then took over the anchor role - more through lack of form than tactical design - while Siddiqui took the game away from the Greens with a sprightly 29 off 18 balls, before being brilliantly caught & bowled by Taj. With only 34 runs to get from seven overs, OCC coasted home with three overs to spare.
