Optimists Cricket Club WOCC (Walferdange Optimists) v Duck & Ferrets CC on Sat 02 May 2009 at 13:30
Match was Drawn

Match report LCF League champions Duck & Ferrets CC held on for a draw against WOCC in an entertaining first trial of the new LCF league rules.

As a change from previous years, declaration cricket has been introduced. Some might say, re-introduced, but not to the LCF league and indeed, there were many players who confessed to never having played declaration cricket before. In summary, the effect is that there are now four possible outcomes from a match instead of three (win, lose, tie). A draw is now a possibility and happens when the side batting second fails to reach thier opponents total, but are not dismissed before the end of the match.

WOCC lost the toss and were asked to bat. Progress was slow at start but once openers Siddiqui and Merkl got into their stride, runs began to flow freely. It took an excellent catch on the deep square-leg boundary from Ghorem to dismiss Siddiqui and break the partnership. From then on wickets fell regularly but not too close together which allowed the score to progress comfortably with Extras putting in a good performance with 38. The champagne moment of WOCC's innings was courtesy of Fitzgerald who, having sized up Mulholland's bowling from the boundary, attempted an extravagant swivel pull first ball and was bowled middle stump for a golden duck. One to cherish, Mark.

The innings was declared closed by WOCC captain Heath with the total on 211 for 7. This left DFCC 65 minutes plus 20 overs for their innings. Indeed WOCC were quick enough with their overs to bowl 40 in total back at DFCC, having only received 35 in their first innings. After losing Chapman first ball to an excellent tumbling catch from Siddiqui at mid-off, DFCC seemed to already look for the draw. Indeed DFCC captain Mole did his best to keep WOCC at bay until he was undone by a top yorker from Siddiqui. DFCC newcomer Pandiant top scored with 33, but DFCC never looked like threatening WOCC's total and it took some real coaxing to dismiss four further batsman. So despite some good, varied bowling from WOCC they were unable to take the final wickets, resulting in a drawn match.

An interesting start to declaration cricket in the LCF, but it will take more ambition from sides batting second to ensure that battling draws don't become the norm in the LCF this season.
