15 Oct 2011 : Development officer starts - a big step forward for cricket in Luxembourg
Saturday 15th October was the first day of Ben Embleton’s employment as Luxembourg’s National Development Officer. Hailing from the northeast of England, Ben (aged 25) is a pretty decent cricketer having played for Durham U17s and in Australian grade cricket. More importantly for this role, he has the English level 2 coaching qualification, has recent experience working with kids in sport (a football project in Munich) and speaks German.

The focus of his work will be to boost the existing youth programme and also establish links with the wider Luxembourgish population. Inspiration for this is Luxembourg rugby which has become a very strong national sport over the last couple of decades after the appointment of their national coach/organiser. Ben will also be there to help adult teams develop, and this will included everyone from
international to occasional players. Planning Ben's programme is work in progress, so if you have any ideas of ways he could make himself useful, then please contact the LCF committee and we will give it some thought.

Ben’s appointment was a requirement from the International Cricket Council to guarantee our affiliate status, but this also offers us a huge opportunity. The ICC will provide part of the initial funding and we are now looking for permanent local funding sources to make thissustainable in the long term. The LCF will be his employer, so all of Luxembourg’s cricketers should feel part of this exciting new venture which will help us take the game forward.

12 Sep 2011 : Optimists U13s complete outdoor season with two games near Paris

Last weekend, a squad of 12 young players set off to Paris to represent the Optimists U13s in a triangular tournament of Twenty20 cricket at two beautiful venues just west of Paris. The first game was against our old friends at Thoiry Cricket Club where the match was played in hot conditions next to the Chateau’s safari park. Thoiry won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bat to avoid fielding in the heat. However, these days the Optimists bowling attack is strong in quality and in depth and a good rotation policy restricted the scoring with no wides conceded in the first 9 overs. Whilst many bowlers contributed it was the accuracy of Oscar Ramsden’s line that stole the show with 4 wickets in his 3 overs all of which were clean bowled. Despite this, the Thoiry batsmen battled on and good running between the wickets led to a total of 97 for 7 wickets at the end of their 20 overs. During an excellent tea break, the Luxembourg batsmen felt confident that the chase was possible but upon the restart they were soon in trouble. Thoiry’s fielders were wide awake and three excellent catches left the total at only 18 for 4 wickets. But then a fine partnership between Alexander Rowe (21) and Zach Foley (26 not out) rescued the innings and set up and exciting finale. With just 12 runs needed of the last two overs and with wickets in hand, the Optimists were favourites but the game turned again due to tight bowling and alert fielding and the Optimists chase ended 4 runs short of the target. But it was a fine game played in an excellent spirit amongst two very equal teams.

After some superb hospitality on Saturday evening, the morning arrived with rain in the air. Nevertheless, the second game at the fantastic facility at the Standard Athletic sports club ground near Versailles got under way after a 45 minute delay. The Optimists were determined to make amends for the loss the day before and after winning the toss, captain Marcus Cope chose to bat. A confident start led by Thomas Martin (10 not out) was extended by contributions from all batsmen notably Riddy Asselman (11) and Zach Foley (10 not out) which kept the runs flowing to an impressive total of 116 for the loss of just one wicket. But the youthful Standard team showed lots of spirit in the field and in their reply despite the damp conditions. However, the Optimists bowlers were taking regular wickets and were assisted by 2 smart run outs which meant that the Standard Athletic innings closed at 61 runs for 7 wickets. All in all, it was a good win from a solid performance for the Luxembourg tourists.

As the Optimists drove home, the third game in the tournament was unfortunately lost to the weather after just 30 minutes of play and declared a draw. This meant that the Optimists finished second with one good win and one narrow defeat but they had gained great experience at two different cricket grounds and made a host of new friends in the process. Unfortunately, the coaching team neglected to take a camera on the trip (sorry) so there are no photos to record the success of the weekend, but the batting performances of Zach Foley and the total of 6 wickets to the bowling of Oscar Ramsden will live long in the memory.

These games were the last of the outdoor fixtures for the U13s group for this season but training continues on Sunday mornings until the end of September.

Optimists U13s squad: Marcus Cope, Alex Barzin, Scott Fedderson, Riddy Asselman, Thomas Martin, Owen William, Robert Walker, Alexander Rowe, Zach Foley, Max Vickers, Max McVeigh and Oscar Ramsden.

24 Aug 2011 : OCC tour to Thoiry cancelled
Due to a lack of numbers we have had to cancel the trip to Thoiry that was due to host a tournament with Royal Brussels, Optimsts and Thoiry CC.

The Maidens will be going and playing against RBCC ladies and Thoiry ladies CC and we wish them the best of luck!

14 Aug 2011 : OCC wins BCF 2nd Division title 2011
The last 2nd division match for the 1st XI started in the morning with a last minute replacement for Will Heath who was stuck in NY on an airport. Fortunate enough Phil was ready to take his place in the starting XI, so we had a full team. Rain stopped 10 minutes before starting time and Joost decided to field first in these wet conditions (with the long grass) in order to have a posible advantage if rain was to follow.

A very good tandem bowling partnership of Suresh and Pandian lead to two wickets in the first 9 overs, including Belgian international Simon Newport for 3. The bowlers were changed round often and this resulted in wickets for all bowlers, where Ananad Pattabiraman continued his good form and took 2-12 off his 3.1 overs. Phil Burleigh and Iqqi were the main threats and took 3-14 off 5 and 2-13 off 7. Antwerp CC was all out for 91, with a small footnote that we missed 7 chances in the field.

Tea was skipped, but it seemed Seb was hungry for food, as he fished outside off stump for his second ball and got caught in the slip cordon in the first over, which brought the skipper to join Paul Monico in the middle. Paul and Joost kept the scoreboard ticking and after a decent partnership Paul had enough and attempted a shot we have seen so much in this league, the hoik over mid wicket. Unfortunately the ball went straight in his stumps and a partnership of 73 ended. Tim Andrews and Joost finished it off in the 18th over for the loss of2 wickets. (Monico 36, Mees 38*)

Leaves me to thank all the players for the great season we have had this year. Great efforts both in T20 competition and by winning the 2nd division in Belgium this year. Special thanks to Mick Swithinbank for scoring for us again this season. Thanks as well to Rob Deed for bringing the champagne and Battin on Sunday to celebrate the promotion. Next year will hopefully be as successful as this year!

11 Aug 2011 : Mike Hawkings
We are sad to hear the news that our friend and fellow cricketer, Mike Hawkings, died on Monday in England. Mike was a life member of the Optimists and Communities cricket clubs, and ever-ready to lend a hand fixing nets and help with junior-coaching. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Mike's wish was not for flowers, but for anyone who would like to make a donation, to do so at Cricket Without Boundaries. http://www.cricketwithoutboundaries.com/
