Optimists Cricket Club News story

Back Yard Cricket weekend summary

08 Sep 2025

Last weekend witnessed BackYard Cricket at the PWCG for the first (and probably not the last) time.
We are deeply grateful to Will Heath and the rest of the groundstaff who worked hard to prepare a grass track that had to stand up to three days of cricket and it didn't disappoint.
With a unique set of rules, BackYard Cricket encourages batters to play proper shots, along the ground and was a world away from the other shorter formats of the game.
The ball we used was a tennis ball, taped on one side for the Test match, enabling everyone to make the ball swing and wobble - some more than others! The other matches had the ball that was entirely covered by tape - less swing but quicker off the surface.
The schedule was packed with a T20 on Friday night, Saturday saw a Test Match followed by a T20 and Sunday, the 50 over game and capped off with a final T10.
Although winning isn't everything, the UK side were surprised at the strength in depth the Optimists had and we emerged victorious in all games.
It was a fantastic event and thoroughly enjoyed by players and spectators alike. A big thank you to Alex from Back Yard Cricket UK for organising to come over and introduce this variation of cricket to Luxembourg.

This week-end sees the International Womens Team compete in a home tournament at the PWCG taking on Austria and Switzerland. Please go down to support the ladies and we wish the Luxembourg team the very best of luck!
