OCC Pushed MCC All the Way in a Thrilling Friday game
Optimists Cricket Club kicked off the MCC Luxembourg Tour with a highly competitive contest against the world-renowned Marylebone Cricket Club, ultimately falling just short as MCC chased down 151 with two balls to spare, winning by five wickets.
Batting: Building a Fighting Total
OCC lost the toss and were put in to bat by MCC, who immediately backed their bowling attack to set the tone. That confidence looked well-placed early on as MCC started brilliantly with the ball - the first over was a maiden, and the third ball of the second over produced the first wicket, Aman departing without troubling the scorers.
Ben E came together with Ravi and the pair rebuilt patiently, initially cautious but gradually getting the team back on track. Ben’s innings was one of his finest for the club - a superb 70 from 47 balls that combined solid defence with well-timed aggression. Useful contributions from Malith, Thiyagu and Oves added crucial depth to the innings, before Milad M brought the late firepower OCC needed, blasting an explosive 25 not out from just 10 deliveries to push the total to a par score of 151.
MCC’s fielding prowess was on full display throughout the innings. They converted several half-chances into wickets through excellent catching - no dropped catches, a rare and impressive sight in Luxembourg cricket. Harry Spear led the attack with an outstanding spell of 3 for 19, Henry Brooks claimed three wickets, and David C chipped in with two to keep OCC from fully cutting loose in the closing overs.
The Chase: OCC Fight to the End
At the innings break, the message was clear - play well to defend this, focus on the basics, keep it tight, and hold your catches.
Milad and Mohit opened the bowling and started well, but MCC were disciplined and composed, moving towards the target at a steady run rate without giving anything away. The first breakthrough came in the 5th over when Milad drew first blood at the score of 32, and just two balls later he struck again to remove the previous game’s centurion Sandun - a massive moment that lifted the team’s belief that the total was very much defendable.
However, the new batsmen kept the run rate healthy and MCC closed the powerplay at 50/2 from 6 overs, comfortably above what was required.
Oves and Pankaj came on as replacements for the opening bowlers, and Oves in particular impressed with his consistent lengths. He was quickly rewarded with a wicket in his very first over. What followed, though, was a commanding batting and running display from MCC - converting ones into twos at will and picking up boundaries in nearly every over. MCC crossed 100 in just 12 overs and were looking firm favourites to chase the score down comfortably.
Pankaj played his final card in the 14th over, bringing Milad back for his last over, and he responded by removing the impressive left-hander to give OCC fresh hope. The score stood at 116/4 - 35 needed from 6 overs, an easy and achievable ask given the conditions from outset.
The skipper turned to spin from both ends, bringing on young Eddie Hudson and Aman. Eddie struggled to find his line, but Aman made an immediate impact with another wicket to keep OCC in the hunt. With less than 6 per over needed, it remained an uphill task against a skilled MCC batting lineup.
OCC pushed the game deep, stretching it to the final two overs with MCC needing 13 from the last 12 balls. Despite aggressive field placements and maximum pressure, the bowlers couldn’t stem the flow of singles and the occasional boundary, and MCC calmly reached their target with two balls to spare without losing another wicket. Some extras, misfields and drop catches didn’t help either.

As captain, I was immensely proud of the effort, attitude and competitiveness shown by every OCC player. We pushed MCC right to the last over and gave one of cricket’s most historic clubs a genuine contest across all 40 overs. There is plenty to build on - and a performance like this shows exactly what this group is capable of.
