Optimists Cricket Club News story

50th Anniversary Gala Dinner - Saturday 6th June

06 Jun 2026

For nearly a year, the planning, organisation and preparation for the club's 50th Anniversary celebrations had been underway. After months of hard work behind the scenes, the long-awaited evening had finally arrived.

Having considered a number of venues, Porta Nova Restaurant was selected as the host for the occasion. We were also delighted to welcome three distinguished guests as speakers, cricket legends: Lord Ian Botham, Matthew Hoggard MBE and Monty Panesar.

From 18:30 onwards, guests were welcomed with drinks on the terrace. It provided a wonderful opportunity for old friends to reconnect, with many former members travelling considerable distances to attend, including from New Zealand, Singapore and beyond.

Optimists Chairman Richard Neale opened the evening with a short welcome speech. He extended a particularly warm welcome to Mr Marcel Sauber and H.E. Joanne Olivier, while also conveying apologies from Mr Jack Simmons, who was unable to attend. A big thank you was offered to the Walferdange Commune for all of their support towards the club since inception and also to the sponsors and members themselves. Following Richard's remarks, MCC Tour Manager Matt Dixon thanked the Optimists Cricket Club for their hospitality and congratulated the club on reaching its significant half-century milestone.

Shortly after a delicious meal, Botham, Hoggard and Panesar took part in a question-and-answer session with members. The discussion was open, insightful and frequently humorous, providing a fascinating glimpse into their careers and experiences in the game. Many members also had the opportunity to collect autographs and photographs with their cricketing heroes. The club is extremely grateful to all three guests for their generosity, time and enthusiasm throughout the evening.

The popularity of the Q&A session meant that proceedings ran slightly over schedule before eventually being brought to a close—time for dessert afterall! With music playing in the background, guests continued to enjoy drinks and conversation well into the early hours.

It was a truly memorable evening and a fitting celebration of the club's first 50 years. A huge thank you goes to everyone who contributed to organising such a successful event.

The first half-century is complete—now on to the century!
