On a glorious summer afternoon, OCC and Munich CC took to the field for what was billed as a friendly, although the Luxembourg sun seemed determined to make it anything but. Captain Will Heath welcomed everyone with his usual positive spirit, reminding players that refreshments were always available, a message that would become increasingly relevant as the day went on.
OCC started brilliantly with Ansh and Andries bowling tight lines and lengths, keeping Munich's scoring rate under control. Ansh struck first with an LBW and finished with 3/36 from 8 overs, while the ever-economical Andries returned figures of 0/15 from 6 overs. Milad then brought his trademark pace, peppering the batsmen with deliveries they seemed much happier watching than facing.
The match also gave OCC's new South African recruits, Gerhardus Crous and Ludwik van Wyk, a chance to shine. After a brief adjustment to Luxembourg conditions, both settled in nicely, with Gerhardus swinging the ball well and Ludwik claiming his first wicket for OCC, safely caught by skipper Will Heath in the covers.
Special mention must go to Ben McIlroy, who delivered an eight-over spell packed with grit, determination and emmence pace... at least in his run-up. Behind the jokes was a quality spell of bowling, as Ben finished with 0/34 from 8 overs, while supporting young leg-spinner Eddie Hudson who ended with 2/41 from 8 overs. Munich CC eventually posted 191/7 from 40 overs, with Jishnu making an excellent fifty before retiring, seemingly in search of a well-earned cold one.
Chasing 192, OCC got off to the perfect start when Tim Andrews cracked the first ball of the innings to the boundary. Unfortunately, what followed was less "comfortable run chase" and more "full-scale batting emergency". Munich's opening bowlers unleashed a devastating display of swing bowling, leaving OCC reeling at 20/5 after 6 overs.
With the game slipping away, Will Heath and Martin Smith steadied the ship with a vital partnership of 82 runs. Heath led calmly from the front before falling for a crucial 44, caught on the boundary trying to keep the momentum going.
That brought Eddie Hudson to the crease, and together he and Martin Smith produced the match-winning stand. Battling the heat, Munich's bowlers and some overly dramatic cramps from Martin, the pair remained composed and slowly turned the game in OCC's favour.
With OCC needing 2 runs to win and Smith needing just 1 for his maiden hundred, the perfect ending arrived. Martin drove through the covers for four, bringing up both the victory and his century in one shot. OCC completed a remarkable comeback, with Martin Smith finishing unbeaten on 103 from 89 balls and Eddie Hudson 37 from 37 balls.
From 20/5 to victory, it was a fantastic display of character and teamwork from OCC, and exactly the kind of confidence-boosting performance the team will want to take into next weekend's playoff matches.
