The morning at Walferdange opened under brilliant Luxembourg skies, setting a picturesque stage for Optimists Cricket Club as they welcomed Munich Cricket Club for a 30-over summer friendly. The match held extra significance for the home side: it marked Malith’s very first game taking the helm as OCC captain. With the squad rallying behind their new skipper, Munich CC won the coin toss and elected to field first—a decision that was met with an immediate, relentless onslaught from the OCC top order.
From the opening ball, OCC set out with a clear strategy to dominate the crease. Asghar set the ground ablaze in an extraordinary display of power hitting, bludgeoning 66 runs off just 32 balls—including nine boundaries and two towering sixes—at a jaw-dropping strike rate over 200. Munich CC did not have any answers to the blitzkrieg. The red ball started turning pink with the kind of hitting. Ravikiran anchored the early overs with a steady 13, while Anand provided calm middle-order stability with a stroke-filled 29. Captain Malith led from the front, unleashing two crisp boundaries to score 12 and reinforce his side’s aggressive tempo.
As the innings progressed, Vijay put on a masterclass in controlled aggression. With the special motivation of playing on his wife’s birthday, Vijay delivered a performance worth celebrating, racing to an undefeated 50 off just 27 balls before retiring to allow his teammates time at the crease. Yama kept the runs flowing with a rapid 20, setting up the stage for Abhinav Singh’s late-innings fireworks. Striking cleanly to all corners of the ground, Abhinav smashed an unbeaten 41 off 23 balls before voluntarily retiring. He played with straight bat, ran hard (read as making his partner run hard too) and put on a 85 run partnership with Vijay. Jalal then delivered the grand finale, striking a brisk, undefeated 19 to propel OCC to a mammoth total of 279/4 from their 30 overs.
Despite OCC’s runaway scoring, Munich CC produced the defining highlight of the first innings through opening bowler Scott. Turning the match on its head in three frantic deliveries, Scott bowled a sensational hat-trick, removing Yama, Srijan, and Kumaresan in consecutive balls. Supported by breakthroughs from Joy, Raja, and Vishnu, as well as disciplined spells from Rohit, Christian, Amol, and Simrat, Munich’s bowling unit kept their spirits high throughout a grueling 30 overs in the sun.
Facing a daunting target of 280, Munich CC stepped up to bat, but Abhinav and Jalal immediately turned up the heat. Opening the attack with blistering pace and lethal movement, Abhinav and Jalal delivered fiery opening spells that caught Munich’s top order completely off guard. Striking early and viciously, they tore through the front line—with Jalal snaring an early wicket and Abhinav knocking over two—putting Munich immediately on the back foot at 23/3.
The rest of Munich's top and middle order—Amol (6), Raja (6), Jishnu (4), Scotty (5), and Vishal (16)—were forced into full defensive mode against the fiery opening barrage. Dave anchored Munich’s middle-order resistance with a fighting team-high 27, supported by Christian (16), Joy (12), and Simmi (4*). Munich battled bravely through to the final over before being wrapped up for 145.
Captain Malith’s bowling changes kept the pressure unrelenting throughout the 30 overs. Following Abhinav’s lethal opening burst of 2/10 and Jalal’s early strike, Vijay returned with the ball to claim figures of 2/13, giving him plenty of bragging rights (and a fine match performance) to take home to his wife on her birthday. Kumaresan matched the tightness with 2/6, while Kashif and Srijan picked up a wicket apiece to wrap up the innings. Backed by sharp catching from Srijan, Jalal, Ravi, and Yama, Optimists CC sealed a comprehensive 134-run victory, handing Captain Malith a triumphant start to his tenure.
