Optimists Cricket Club Won Optimists won by 119 runs

Match report Optimists 1st Xi cruised to victory against 12 Stars CC

Fighting to get back on a winning streak in the BCF 45 over league, the Optimists were faced with a very strong opposition of 12 Stars and having lost the toss, they were put in to bat first.

The overcast conditions called for a good start and after the quick dismissal of Seb Finch a solid foundation was required. This is exactly what was delivered by Paul Monico (74) and Richard Neale (79) as their excellent partnership of 135 got the optimists in a great position to accelerate. Both Neale and Monico played beautiful cricket shots to all parts of the ground and gave very few chances to a disciplined bowling attack. After a couple of wickets fell cheaply, 250 seemed a long way away but Joost Mees (24) and Aanand Pandey (17) contributed a quick and much needed partnership of 32. Eventually with Iqbal Murad and Nishith Gandhi scoring a quick 14 and 15 respectively, the optimists reached a score of 262 in 45 overs.

As always a good start was required from Optimists opening bowlers and Nishith Gandhi’s 2 early wickets provided exactly that. A fifty run partnership then developed for the 12 stars and a wicket almost seemed like a necessity. Thankfully for the Optimists very own Anand Pattabiraman was introduced into the attack. With his deceiving flight and unpredictable spin he managed to dismiss both in-form batsmen as they skied their strokes and were brilliantly caught out in the deep by Tony Whiteman and Joost Mees. Whiteman’s catch was particularly memorable as the ball practically launched into orbit and swirling in the gusty conditions. Whiteman made the catch look easy though but it was a spectacular catch! Iqbal Murad too was bowling an excellent spell at the other end ending with figures of 9 overs, 1 maiden, 2 for 27. As the lower ordered batsmen set mark on the field, Anand had no problem extracting spin and bounce from the pitch. The tailenders were quickly dismissed, first from a very good stumping from Seb Finch and secondly by a brilliant one handed diving catch at full stretch by Richard Neale off an attempted doosra from Anand (6.2 overs, 5 for 30). Taral Desai, Pandian and Richard Neale also added towards keeping the scoring rate down. In all, a great day in the field with contribution from every player lead to a very satisfying and comprehensive win for the Optimists.
