Match report
After the huge storms of Friday night, it was lovely to see the skies clear and the temperature climb. It’s never too hot to play cricket. DW, old friends and visitors over many years won the toss and elected to bat. Hitting out from the start they got off to a brisk start.
OCC bowlers bowled well but sadly we gave them far too many lives with dropped catches. Vishal batted with good timing and a keen eye and rode his luck. Seven of the eight OCC bowlers managed to bag just two wickets between them, despite, as I have said, bowling well.
Then, as often happens with this wonderful game, things happened. To the grinning delight of the OCC players, Vishal, on 98 not out pushed hard at a ball which was misfielded in the covers. “Two, two, two!” he cried and ran in for his century only for the umpire to call “One short!” The non-striker was to blame. I hope they are good friends.
Then out strode mighty Codd and stepped up to the crease. The non-striking, short running culprit was stumped. Next ball, the new batsman flashed hard and edged it to slip. Hat-trick ball … caught at cover point to another looping edge. The next ball was driven hard and just went over the fielder’s reaching hand for one – so nearly four in four - then Vishal got his ton.
A hat-trick and a century in the same over must be something rare. Wayne Codd finished with the excellent figures of 6 – 26 off four overs and made it all look so easy. DW finished on 211 – 9 after their 40 overs.
OCC batted well with Suhail top scoring on 45 but wickets tumbled regularly. There was a moment on 172 – 8 where only 40 was needed off eight overs. “We can do this”, said Number 9 to number 10. “Five an over; that’s all, let’s keep calm and take what comes.”
Ah … two balls later everyone was back in the pavilion 172 all out. Cricket.
