Exiles CC v Optimists Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 09 Jun 2012 at 15:00
Optimists Cricket Club Won by five wickets
Match report
On a windy Saturday afternoon on the coastline of Belgium, Optimists 1st XI skipper Joost Mees won the toss against the Exiles and decided to field first in what was a must win game if the hopes of the T20 finals day were to be kept alive.
Arjun Nandal and Taral Desai opened the attack and both bowled with a tidy line and length with a hint of movement. However, the bowling was not going to be the highlight of the day, instead the catching prowess of the 1st XI took centre stage! There were some dollys caught but Arvind Pandey managed to take a spectacular catch somehow with both feet off the ground, Embleton took two diving catches, Burleigh, Desai, Ali and Aanand Pandey all caught skiers and not one was put down..certainly a first in recent times.
Tight bowlign continued with Neale and Embleton but Aanand Pandey also bowled with a good variation of pace and a steady line and the Exiles were bowled out for a lowly 94.
In true Optimists form though, what should of been a comparatively easy run chase was made difficult. Ali opened with Burliegh and Ali was quick to hit some lofty blows including one great six over long leg before he eventually holed out. Burleigh celebrated the three car journey with a golden duck and when skipper Mees was bowled for 1, the Optimists were 18-3 off 4 overs. Nandal and Desai looked to steady the ship and took the score to 38 off 8 overs before Nandal departed. Neale joined Desai and together batted steadily to take the score to within grasp before Neale was bowled which allowed Embleton to come in and knock off the winning runs with 3 overs to spare.
A great team performance and this now means we are one win away from winning the group stage and automatically qualifying for the finals day in August.
