Match report
After the excitement and tension of the previous week's league match, OCC 1st XI came back down to earth with a bump by putting in its worst performance so far this year against a competent side from Mechelen, recently promoted from Division 2.
Batting first, OCC struggled against a solid MCC opening pair of Usman and Shahid. Usman in particular, was always threatening and ended up accounting for the top three batsmen Pattabiraman, Burleigh and Heath, all falling cheaply. 1st change bowler then proved too good for the next three batsmen. Out of the top six, five were bowled by full, straight deliveries. Although the ball was swinging, it certainly asked questions of the OCC batsmen's technique that they were unable to answer.
With the innings already in tatters at 63/6 and Phil Burleigh muttering about getting the urn on for an early tea, Wayne Codd tried valiantly to steady the ship, eventually top scoring with 24. Unfortunately it was too great a challenge, as wickets were still falling at the other end. OCC subsided to a sorry 131 all out in 37 overs. On a lightening-quick outfield, where the previous day, 358 runs had been scored in 45 overs, this total could justifiably have been considered 150 runs short of par.
Indeed, MCC completed the chase withing 24 overs. Saheryou entertained the crowd at the end with a blistering 40 not out, off 16 balls, which included one of the biggest straight sixes seen at the PWCG, landing by the posts of the rugby pitch next door.
So, with three league games out of 10 played, OCC are now beginning to look over their shoulder, instead of forward to the title. Not quite what was planned.
