Royal Brussels CC v Optimists Cricket Club OCC (BCF) 1st XI on Sun 16 Aug 2009 at 13:30
Optimists Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
With relegation assured, the 1st XI travelled up to RBCC with a relatively relaxed attitude, looking forward to a decent game of cricket against a good friendly RBCC team.
Unfortunately RBCC's bowlers proved to be too good. Ex-Zimbabwe test bowler Brighton Watambwe bowled well and didn't concede one run off the bat. As so often in cricket, batsmen look to keep the good bowlers out and then succumb to the change bowlers. Leg-spinner Murad ended up with rather flattering figures of 4-2-17-4 and OCC's innings ended in the 30th over for a paltry 79 runs.
With the OCC innings finishing so early, tea was postponed for an hour and OCC immediately took to the field. Aanand Pandey, in his first match for the OCC 1st XI took two wickets in one over, which was the highlight of the rather short second half. It took RBCC only 10 overs to win the game, typically with Watambwe hitting his first ball for a massive straight six.
Once again, OCC were totally outclassed in every department, except perhaps tea-eating. This sorry season ends with the 1st XI winning just one game in ten. Although a strong team on paper, OCC never managed to field its true first team on any of the ten occasions. So perhaps the BCF second division does indeed represent the right level.
