Greens CC v Optimists Cricket Club 1st XI on Sun 12 Jul 2009 at 13:30
Optimists Cricket Club Lost 4 wickets

Match report Searching for an elusive second victory of the season, the 1st team travelled up to the pleasant ground of Royal Brussels, who kindly rent their ground to Greens CC. With unpredictable weather, Greens won the toss and chose to field, understandably to control the run-rate in the event of a rain-affected run chase.

OCC started their innings solidly enough until Whiteman was given out caught behind. This was unfortunate as the red mark on his shoulder clearly demonstrated that the bat had not been involved in the shot. Another unfortunate dismissal (Mees), a soft dismissal (Heath) and a needless run-out (Venkatachalam), left the OCC innings in the fimiliar position of weakness. Thankfully Roshan Vishwanath steadied the ship with Phil Burleigh. Both picked off singles regularly and OCC were beginning to look more comfortable, when Phil Burleigh was desperatly unlucky to get out. Having decided to open up, he timed the ball firmly over the bowlers head only for the bowler to deflect the ball straight into the eager hands of the mid-off fielder, 20 metres away. Roshan continued to batting well until the last over of the match when going for the glory shot to get his fifty, he holed out to deep mid-wicket. Never mind, OCC had recovered to post a semi-competitive score of 197.

However, the Greens never looked in trouble. Mohammaed Amjad, one of the Greens danger men, always looked comfortable and only a lapse in concentration caused him to fall to Burleigh with a lazy cut to Desai at cover point. From then on, Aftar Latif anchored the innings and a few lusty blows from skipper Ghulam Rubbani and Nadeem Anjum later, Greens had coasted to 199 with 11 overs to spare.

This now puts the 1st team in a very precarious position, with only three games left, we need to win at least two games to have a chance of staying in the BCF First Division. The outcome is in the hands of the players.
